Lyman S. Ayres was born in New York state and began his business career there as a peddler and later partner in a dry goods firm. In 1872 he became a partner in the Trade Palace in Indianapolis, but remained in New York. In 1874 he took full ownership of the store, and moved to Indianapolis in 1875.
